In  the  first  re-enactment  of  the  historic  “Liberation  Concerts,”  originally  played  by  Jewish Holocaust survivors at St. Ottilien monastery in 1945, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutterand  the  Israeli Buchmann-Mehta School of Music Symphony Orchestraof Tel Aviv University opened the concert series  “Liberation  Concerts”  in  2018.  It  pays  tribute  to  the  Jewish  history  of  the  monastery:  The Archabbey of the Benedictine mission southwest of Munich housed a hospital, which cared for some of the few Holocaust survivors and more than 400 so called “Ottilien Babies” after the Second World War.

The concert series is part of the Artists in Residence-Project: this award acknowledges artistic, journalistic and academic work, which evolved during a spiritual stay at St. Ottilien, on the topics of Liberation and memory, while contributing to lively democratic practice. Promoting memory culture and shaping the future through composition, music, fine arts, photograph and the word.
